Federation: The future of the internet

ActivityPub is a web standart now, so that more than likely means wider adoption of this amazing protocol. Just like the standartization of cellular networks has brought the interoperability of these networks, a standart social media protocol is about to bring an era of competing and federated social media platforms. In a few years, it will not be beneficial for Facebook or Twitter to keep their doors closed, even though they may still own a monopoly over social networking. Most people in the United States use Comcast as their ISP, but you don't see them stopping to support non-comcast services. The fediverse is still pretty small (compared to FB or Twitter) and there is no commercial implementation of ActivityPub, so it stays in the nerdy realm for now, but just give it time and you'll soon see almost every social media platform supporting federation.
